There are many articles that give you 8, 9, 10 or even more mistakes to avoid when hiring a roofing company in Omaha. As a roofing contractor in Omaha for 15 years, I have a perspective most don’t, and that is of someone on the inside. I know what a quality roofing company looks like. That’s why I don’t think you need to try to avoid 10 mistakes when hiring a roofing company in Omaha. Instead, there are just 2 mistakes to avoid when hiring a roofing contractor. If you don’t you might get burned by a roofing company.
1. Paying Upfront
Whether it’s giving money to get the job started or paying ahead of the work completed. Whomever controls the money controls the job. Let me say that again. WHOMEVER CONTROLS THE MONEY CONTROLS THE JOB. Don’t get caught overpaying for work not completed or materials not delivered. There is only one exception to this rule and that is if you are wanting a product that is special order. Special order products are almost always not returnable. So a company will want to collect an upfront payment to cover this material cost to protect itself from a customer backing out after the product is already ordered and the company is now responsible to pay bill. Well, you might ask yourself the question of “how do I know if a product is special order?” Don’t worry, you won’t make that mistake if you don’t make mistake #2.
2. No Research
You should do as much research about roofing companies and products as possible. The more information you have, the harder it will be for you to make a mistake. For example, “how do I know if the material I’m interested in is special order, and would it be OK to pay a portion of money upfront?”
That is actually easy to answer; just call a local roofing supply house and ask if the material is a special order and not returnable. Try Roof Depot, which has a local branch here in Omaha. Other really easy resources to take advantages of to research roofing companies in Omaha are:
The City of Omaha Planning and Permits Department: Ask them if the contractor you would like to use has an active license. Also, ask about that contractor’s permitting history. When was the last permit pulled? How far back have they been pulling permits?
Better Business Bureau: Not the end all, be all it’s made out to be, but still helpful. Just know that some lists of companies on this site are paid advertising lists. Never hire a roofing company solely based on their BBB rating. Always cross reference with other resources.
Social Media: More and more people are using Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Yelp to leave honest reviews and refer reputable roofing companies in Omaha to their friends.
